Christmas Valley

Located in Lake County, in Oregon’s High Desert Region, the open landscape of the Christmas Valley area invokes a kind of Old West feeling. This is an area of large hay farms, small family farms, small businesses, recreational properties, vacation homes, and people who want to live a quieter lifestyle or explore the freedom of living off-grid. The people who call this area home are hard-working people who love the land and live a more independent, adventurous lifestyle.

This is country living, part of the Oregon Outback along the Christmas Valley Back Country Byway with incredible views of the desert landscapes. You are going to want to do some exploring, and many of the roads are gravel or dirt, so make sure you have a high-clearance vehicle when you travel here.

As you make the turn from Hwy 31 to the community of Fort Rock, stop and visit the Fort Rock Valley Museum to learn a bit about the history of Christmas Valley. The area is rich in history, there is evidence that people have lived in the area for over 10,000 years! The geology is very unique offering some pretty amazing places to visit, including Fort Rock, Crack in the Ground, The Lost Forest, Fossil LakeGlass Buttes, and the very popular Christmas Valley Sand Dunes! People come from all over to play and explore the area with their OHV/ATV’s. There are many BLM-Managed areas to ride and experience adventure and create family memories that last a lifetime!

The environment here is arid, it doesn’t get the heavy rainfall amounts that the interior valleys of Oregon are famous for.

CHRISTMAS VALLEY WEATHER

The trees in the valley are mostly Western Juniper. The soil is varied and unique, and the area is abundant in wildlife! We often see mule deer, coyote, jackrabbits, and pronghorn in the fields, it is also home to many species of birds, including grouse, quail, waterfowl, and raptors.

There is plenty of wide-open space, mostly range and farmland surrounded by foothills in the distance. The sun shines often here, and the sunsets are really something to see! There is very little light pollution, so if you love to look up at the stars at night, this is the place!

The community of Christmas Valley has a 9-hole golf course, a lake, an airport, and a gas station. There are several churches, a hardware store, a motel, Dollar General, a Post office, several restaurants, an RV park, and a few eclectic shops. If you need more supplies, a night out, or larger stores, the town of La Pine is only about an hour away.

It feels like freedom here, freedom from a busy lifestyle, cars rushing by, sirens, and city noise. It’s quiet, serene, and has a magical beauty. The area is becoming more popular as people are looking for a place to unwind, explore outdoor recreation, and have some space, maybe a few animals or a garden and enjoy the peacefulness of the high desert in Christmas Valley!
